Moses with the Burning Bush, with Moses Removing His Shoes, ca. 1465–1470. Attributed to Dieric Bouts the Elder, the work depicts two moments from Moses’s encounter with God on Mount Horeb: in the background, he removes his shoes after God instructs him that he must approach in bare feet because he stands on holy ground; in the foreground, the shepherd-cum-prophet has drawn closer, where God instructs him to deliver the Israelites from Egypt and “unto a land flowing with milk and honey.”
